NOTES: "Whoop ‘Em Up, Cindy" by Uncle Dave Macon & His Fruit Jar Drinkers was recorded on Vocalion 15323 and issued May 1926. Meade says Macon’s song reminds him of a unknown minstrel song. The second strain (Chorus) has a melody similar to Sally Ann. The verse is similar to Cindy in the Meadow (Cindy songs) and Liza Jane songs. Many of the verses are floaters from Bile Dem Cabbage and Liza Jane songs. The New Lost City Ramblers version (Version 2) is different from Macon’s original version (Version 1).

WHOOP 'EM UP CINDY
Uncle Dave Macon Vo 5099

[spoken] Gentlemen, if you ain't right, git right!
[banjo]
[spoken] That's got me, let's go now!
[banjo]

Went upon the mountain, give my horn a blow,
Thought I heard my true love say, "Yonder comes my beau."

*Chorus: Whoop 'em up Cindy, Lord Lord,
I love Cindy, Lord, Lord.
Whoop 'em up Cindy, Lord, Lord,
Gone forever more. [rapping]

Went upon the mountain, cut my sugar cane,
Every time I cut a stalk, thought of Cindy Jane. (Chorus)

Cindy she's a ratting girl, Cindy she's a rose,
How I love my Cindy girl, Lord Almighty knows. (Chorus)

I've got a girl in Baltimore, I've got one in Savannah,
One in Baltimore's named Liza, other little girl's named Hannah. (Chorus)

Higher up the mountain top, greener grow the cherries,
Sooner the boys court the girls, sooner they are married. (Chorus)

Got old Liza Rankin, got old Liza Green,
Hitch up Mike and Charley, love my own doney (Chorus)

Wake up Monday morning, trouble in my mind,
Sixteen turkeys in one flock, know we's one behind. (Chorus)

*Macon sometimes sings:

Chorus: Whoop 'em up Cindy, Lord Lord
Whoop 'em up Cindy, Lord, Lord
I love Cindy, Lord, Lord
Gone forever more. [rapping]
