NOTES: A similar song titled, “Don't You Cry Melinda” could be the source of John Carson’s 1925 recording. “Don't You Cry Melinda” was recorded by Bob Siggins, on Old-Time Banjo Project, Elektra EKL-7276, LP (1964), trk# 20.

Both songs came from an earlier source. Meade points out the related lyrics found in “Dat’s Me and Marthy Ann” found in several songsters from the 1881 on. The chorus is:

Then fare you well Melinda
Fare you well Jane,
Fare you well Susie dear,
I won’t see you again.”

These songs found by Meade are simply broadside reprints of the 1874 coon song “Dat's me and Martha Ann” composed by Eddie Fox; As sung by: Lew Simmons. Originally published: Boston : G.D. Russell & Company, c1874.

CHORUS:
Then fare you well Melinda
Fare you well Jane,
Fare you well Susy dear,
I won’t see you again
I’ve fell in love wid a turtle dove
And offered her my hand.
Tomorrow night we’ll both get hitched,
Dat’s me and Marthy-Ann.

DO ROUND MY LINDY-Fiddlin' John Carson
Okeh 45032 Recorded: 1925 Issued: February 1926

(Fiddle)

Chorus: Do round my Lindy
Do ‘round my Jane
For I’m a-goin’ away with a pretty little girl
But I’m coming back again

My Lindy is handsome
My Lindy is stout
But she broke my new suspenders
When she stood out on my hat

Chorus: Do round my Lindy
Do ‘round my Jane
For I’m a-goin’ away with a pretty little girl
But I’m coming back again (repeat Chorus)

I was wish I was an alligator
And when I went to swim
I’d open my mouth as wide as I could
And scoot my Lindy in.

Chorus: Do round my Lindy
Do ‘round my Jane
For I’m a-goin’ away with a pretty little girl
But I’m coming back again (repeat Chorus)
