John Randolph- Maddox (VA) 1918 Sharp H

John Randolph- Maddox (VA) 1918 Sharp H

[My title. From English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians by Cecil Sharp/Karpeles 1932. Single stanza with music.

R. Matteson 2014]

Sharp footnotes:  Bars of this rhythm, which occur constantly in this tune, were sung so that each of the first two notes were given rather more than their face value, i. e. the first note was nearly a crotchet, the second nearly a minim. The whole melody was sung quite slowly. Heptatonic. Mixolydian.

H. [John Randolph] Sung by Mrs. ADA MADDOX at Buena Vista, Va., April 30, 1918
Heptatonic. Mixolydian.

What for your supper, John Randolph, my son?
What for your supper, my darling one?
Eel soup and vin'gar, has made my bed soon.
Mother, I'm sick at the heart and want to lie down.
